Rostral is an anatomical directional term used to describe a position toward the front end of the body, toward the nose, or toward the oral region. The term derives from Latin rostrum, meaning “beak” or “snout,” and is commonly used in human anatomy, neuroscience, and comparative anatomy to express orientation along an axis.

In human anatomy, rostral generally corresponds to anterior, especially in relation to the face. In neuroanatomy, particularly when describing the brain and brainstem, rostral denotes toward the front of the head or toward the nose, while caudal denotes toward the back or toward the tail. The terms are relative and may be defined with reference to the standard anatomical position or the neuraxis; for example, the olfactory bulbs are more rostral than the hippocampus, whereas the spinal cord is caudal to the brain.
