Roomikuid is a term used in Estonian-speaking textile and materials science communities to refer to a class of small-diameter fibers designed for use in interior textiles and lightweight composite materials.

The name is etymologically derived from Estonian ruum ("space" or "room") and kuid ("fiber").

Properties: Roomikuid fibers are typically micrometer-scale in diameter and can be engineered for high flexibility, strength, moisture management, and durability under bending. They may be produced from synthetic polymers such as polyester or nylon, or from natural or biobased polymers such as cellulose derivatives or polylactic acid. Variants can be designed for flame retardancy, UV resistance, and low electrostatic charge.

Applications: Used in interior textiles such as upholstery fabrics, carpets, and wall coverings with acoustical or tactile properties, and in lightweight composites for interior panels and architectural or automotive interiors. They can be spun into yarns or incorporated as nonwoven layers.

Production and environment: Roomikuid are produced by standard fiber-spinning techniques, including melt-spinning, wet-spinning, or solution-spinning, followed by finishing steps. Biobased or recycled variants aim to improve sustainability; some synthetic forms raise concerns about microplastics, guiding research into recyclability and safe disposal.

Status: The term is most common in Estonian-language sources and design discourse; it has not achieved wide international standardization and may refer to a broad range of micrometer-scale fibers rather than a single material class.
