Roleplay is the act of assuming the perspective, voice, and actions of a fictional character or persona. In practice, participants describe what their character thinks, says, and does, often within a shared setting and rules. Roleplay can be recreational, educational, or therapeutic, and it can take place in person or online.

Formats vary. Tabletop role-playing games rely on a game master, character sheets, and dice to resolve outcomes, while live-action role-playing involves physically acting out scenes. Online roleplay occurs in forums, chat channels, or online games, emphasizing collaborative storytelling and character development within established settings.

Roleplay emphasizes creativity, empathy, and social interaction. It often uses rules or guidelines to determine success but can be largely improvised. Participants build backstories, goals, and relationships, and the narrative progresses through dialogue, decisions, and chance elements.

Etiquette and safety are central. Consent, clear boundaries, and respect for other players help create inclusive environments. Many communities use lines and veils or other safety tools to manage sensitive content and avoid unwanted topics.

History and scope. Roleplay has roots in improvisational theater and collaborative storytelling, with modern tabletop RPGs emerging in the 1970s. Online roleplay expanded with forums and MUDs in the late 20th century and continues in forums, social platforms, and video games, reflecting a diverse range of practices and communities.
