Road-railway, commonly known as a road-rail vehicle or dual-mode vehicle, refers to a vehicle engineered to operate on both road surfaces and railway tracks. They are deployed for railway maintenance, inspection, construction support, and emergency response where full train access or track possession would be impractical or costly.

Design and operation: Most road-rail vehicles combine a standard road vehicle platform with retractable or exchangeable steel rail wheels that enable temporary running on track. When on rail, the wheels are engaged and the vehicle may be driven under its own power or propelled by a locomotive, depending on configuration. Some designs use a dedicated rail bogie with retractable wheelsets. Powertrains range from diesel to electric or hybrid systems; some models are self-propelled on rails, others are towed. Access between modes may require a procedural sequence and operator training.

Applications: RRVs are used for track inspection, measurement, switching, overhead line maintenance support, signaling equipment checks, and vegetation management alongside tracks, as well as rapid response in incident scenarios. They enable work within rail corridors without occupying a full-length work train, reducing planning complexity and disruption.

Advantages and limitations: They offer flexible access to remote or congested sections, faster mobilization, and potential cost savings for targeted tasks. Limitations include restricted load capacity, speed restrictions on rails, additional maintenance of dual-mode systems, and regulatory requirements for dual-use equipment and crew qualification.

Regulatory and safety: Operation is governed by railway safety standards in each jurisdiction. Operators must be trained, and track possession or protection must be established when working on active rail lines.
