Ristikkäinliittymä, often translated as "crossover network" or "crossover" in English, is a passive electronic circuit used in loudspeakers to divide an audio signal into different frequency ranges and send them to appropriate speaker drivers. This is crucial because different speaker drivers are optimized for specific frequency bands. For example, a woofer is designed to reproduce low frequencies, a midrange driver handles middle frequencies, and a tweeter is best suited for high frequencies. Without a crossover, sending the full-range signal to all drivers would result in poor sound quality, distortion, and potentially damage to the drivers.

The primary function of a crossover is to act as a frequency filter. It typically consists of inductors and capacitors. Inductors resist changes in current and tend to block high frequencies while allowing low frequencies to pass. Capacitors, conversely, block low frequencies and allow high frequencies to pass. By combining these components in specific configurations, a crossover can create different "slopes" or rates at which frequencies are attenuated. Common slopes include 6 dB, 12 dB, 18 dB, and 24 dB per octave, with higher dB values indicating a sharper cutoff.

Crossovers can be implemented either passively, as described above, within the loudspeaker cabinet, or actively, before the amplification stage. Active crossovers require separate amplifiers for each frequency band, offering more precise control and potentially higher efficiency, but also adding complexity and cost. Passive crossovers are more common in consumer audio systems due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. The design and quality of the crossover network significantly impact the overall sound performance of a loudspeaker system.
