Riskihyötyanalyysi, or risk-benefit analysis in English, is a systematic process used to evaluate the potential positive outcomes (benefits) of a decision or action against its potential negative outcomes (risks). The goal is to determine whether the anticipated benefits outweigh the associated risks, thereby informing a more rational and informed decision-making process. This approach is widely applied across various fields, including business, public policy, medicine, and engineering.

In practice, a risk-benefit analysis involves identifying all relevant risks and benefits. Risks can be financial, operational, reputational, environmental, or safety-related, among others. Benefits are typically measured in terms of profit, efficiency gains, improved health outcomes, or enhanced societal well-being. Once identified, both risks and benefits are often quantified, either monetarily or through other measurable metrics, to facilitate comparison. However, quantifying certain qualitative risks and benefits can be challenging, requiring subjective judgment or the use of scoring systems.

The analysis then proceeds to assess the probability and impact of each identified risk. High-probability, high-impact risks are given more weight.
