Risiiniöljy, known in English as castor oil, is a vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and Eastern Africa, but is now cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Risiiniöljy is a pale yellow liquid with a distinctive, somewhat unpleasant odor and taste. Its chemical composition is primarily triglycerides of ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid unique to this oil.

Historically, risiiniöljy has been used for a variety of purposes. In ancient Egypt, it was used as a fuel for lamps and as a cosmetic. It has long been employed in traditional medicine, particularly as a laxative. The ricinoleic acid component is believed to be responsible for its strong purgative effects, as it irritates the intestinal lining and stimulates bowel movements. Due to this effect, it is still used as a short-term treatment for constipation, though prolonged use is not recommended.

Beyond its medicinal applications, risiiniöljy finds use in various industries. It is a common ingredient in cosmetics, skincare products, soaps, and lubricants. Its viscosity and lubricating properties make it suitable for industrial applications. It can also be used in the production of paints, varnishes, and plastics.
