Rikkipäästöjen refers to emissions of sulfur compounds, primarily sulfur dioxide (SO2), into the atmosphere. These emissions are a significant environmental concern due to their role in air pollution and acid rain. The main anthropogenic sources of sulfur emissions include the burning of fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, in power plants and industrial facilities. Natural sources also contribute, such as volcanic eruptions and the decomposition of organic matter.

When sulfur dioxide is released into the atmosphere, it can undergo chemical transformations, reacting with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric acid and sulfate particles. These substances can then fall to the Earth's surface as acid rain, snow, fog, or dry particles. Acid rain can damage forests, acidify lakes and rivers, harm aquatic life, and corrode buildings and monuments. The sulfate particles contribute to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air, which can have adverse effects on human respiratory and cardiovascular health.

Efforts to reduce rikkipäästöjen have been implemented globally through legislation and technological advancements. Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, commonly known as scrubbers, are widely used in power plants to remove sulfur dioxide from exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. Regulations limiting the sulfur content in fuels have also played a crucial role in lowering emissions. These measures have led to a significant decrease in sulfur emissions in many industrialized countries over the past few decades, resulting in improved air quality and reduced environmental damage.
