riftus

Riftus is a fictional genus of fossil marine invertebrates created for illustrative purposes in discussions of paleontological method and biodiversity. It is not a real taxon recognized by scientific nomenclature, and no specimens exist outside of hypothetical case studies.

Most described Riftus fossils are small, ranging from 2 to 6 cm, with an oval to elongated calcified exoskeleton. The carapace bears a pattern of raised ridges forming a crack-like or fractal ornament, which is the basis for the name Riftus. The body comprises a fused dorsal shield and a segmented ventral region, with a series of short appendages used for substrate exploration and feeding.

Ecology: Riftus is imagined to have inhabited shallow marine environments in warm to temperate seas during a hypothetical Triassic episode. It is presumed detritivorous or suspension-feeding, living in colonies within fragmented reef systems and within fissured carbonate rocks that resemble rifts—hence the name.

Distribution and discovery: In the fictional literature, Riftus fossils have been reported from stratigraphic sequences described as “Rift Basin” formations located across multiple paleocontinents. The genus was coined by the fictional paleontologist A. Veris in the 2010s in teaching case materials to illustrate taphonomy and fossil preservation under variable sedimentation rates.

Etymology: Riftus derives from Latin riftus meaning crack or fissure, reflecting the fractured surface texture of the imagined exoskeleton. Taxonomic placement is deliberately broad in fiction, often placed among calcified marine invertebrates for didactic purposes.
