Richtsnoer is a traditional tool used in construction and surveying to establish a straight, reference line across a surface. The term comes from Dutch, with richt meaning to align or correct and snoer meaning string. A richtsnoer consists of a length of cord or twine attached at both ends to fixed anchors such as pegs, nails, or fixtures. When stretched taut, the string provides a visible guideline that workers can follow or align against.

Commonly used in masonry, bricklaying, carpentry, tiling, and fencing, the richtsnoer helps mark where bricks, tiles, boards, or other elements should meet or be leveled. It is often employed to set the top of a brick course, establish straight wall lines, or transfer measurements from a plan to the work surface. The line is typically kept taut with tensioners or line blocks, and its height or alignment is checked with a spirit level or water level to ensure accuracy.

Materials vary, with cords made from cotton or synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester. Some variations emphasize visibility with colored or braided strings, and in some cases chalk or dye is used in combination with a chalk line for marking surfaces.
