Ribozë is a term used in speculative biology and science fiction to denote a hypothetical class of RNA-based life-forms. The name blends the prefix ribo-, referring to ribonucleic chemistry, with the Greek word zoë for life, reflecting their proposed reliance on RNA for both genetic information and catalysis. In this concept, ribozë are modeled as protocell-like entities whose genomes are primarily composed of RNA molecules that function as both genes and enzymes.

Biology and metabolism: Ribozë would be enclosed in membrane-bound vesicles resembling simple cells. Their metabolic networks would be driven by ribozymes—RNA catalysts that perform key chemical transformations, including RNA polymerization and energy-yielding reactions. They would likely exploit environmental chemical gradients and possible inorganic energy sources, rather than relying on proteins.

Genetics and replication: In many models, ribozë replicate by templated RNA copying, aided by RNA polymerase ribozymes to transcribe RNA templates. Mutation and selection would occur at the level of sequence variants, enabling evolution toward greater catalytic efficiency and complexity. The absence of DNA would distinguish ribozë from known cellular life as well as most viruses.

Status and research: Ribozë remain hypothetical. The concept is explored in origin-of-life discussions and in synthetic biology as a thought experiment about how early life could organize biology around RNA. Experimental work has generated ribozyme networks and RNA-containing protocells that illuminate possible stages of an RNA-centric early biosphere, but no living ribozë have been observed on Earth.
