Retroreflektív is a term used to describe a surface or material that reflects light directly back towards its source, regardless of the angle of incidence. This property is distinct from specular reflection, where light is reflected at an equal and opposite angle to the incident ray, or diffuse reflection, where light is scattered in many directions. Retroreflective surfaces are designed to maximize the return of light to the observer, making them appear exceptionally bright when illuminated.

The mechanism behind retroreflection often involves a specific structure within the material. Common retroreflective materials utilize small, transparent spheres or prisms. In the case of beaded retroreflectors, tiny glass spheres are embedded in a binder. Light entering a sphere is refracted, reflected off the back surface, and then refracted again upon exiting, directing it back towards the source. Prismatic retroreflectors use precisely angled surfaces to achieve a similar effect.

Retroreflective materials have numerous practical applications. They are widely used in safety signage, road markings, and high-visibility clothing for pedestrians and road workers to enhance visibility at night or in low-light conditions. This is crucial for preventing accidents by making individuals and objects more easily detectable by vehicle headlights. Other uses include reflective tape for vehicles, safety vests, and even some types of decorative elements where a strong return of light is desired. The effectiveness of retroreflection is often measured by its luminance factor, indicating how brightly it appears under illumination.
