A retimer is a type of electronic device used to improve the integrity of digital signals, particularly in high-speed communication systems. It functions by receiving a degraded signal, regenerating it, and then retransmitting a clean, reshaped version of the original signal. This process is crucial for overcoming signal degradation that occurs over long transmission lines or through multiple connectors and components.

The primary mechanism of a retimer involves signal conditioning. When a digital signal travels, it can experience issues such as jitter (timing variations), attenuation (loss of amplitude), and distortion. A retimer detects these impairments and employs techniques like clock and data recovery (CDR) to extract a clean clock signal from the incoming data. This recovered clock is then used to sample the data at precise moments, effectively removing jitter and producing a new, cleaner output signal.

Retimers are commonly found in applications where reliable data transmission over significant distances is required. Examples include computer peripherals like USB, Thunderbolt, and DisplayPort cables, as well as networking equipment and server interconnects. By restoring signal quality, retimers enable higher data rates and longer cable lengths, ensuring the integrity and reliability of digital communications. They are distinct from simple redrivers, which primarily amplify a signal without the sophisticated clock and data recovery capabilities of a retimer.
