Resurfacers are processes, tools, or materials used to restore the surface properties of objects or structures that have degraded through wear, corrosion, fouling, or contamination. The goal is to re-establish texture, roughness, adherence, corrosion resistance, or optical/thermal properties without reconstructing the bulk material.

Applications span civil engineering, manufacturing, and health care. In civil engineering, road resurfacing involves applying a new surface layer (asphalt or concrete) to restore ride quality, durability, and safety, often accompanied by milling or micro-surfacing to prepare the base. In manufacturing and metalworking, resurfacing includes mechanical finishing such as grinding, polishing, or abrasive blasting to remove oxides and irregularities and to re-establish a smooth or textured surface. Chemical resurfacers use etchants or solvent-based cleaners to strip contaminants or surface films; thermal resurfacers employ lasers or plasma to remove damaged layers or to alter surface properties.

More specialized uses include enamel resurfacing in dentistry, where surfaces are cleaned, smoothed, and sometimes etched or polished to improve adhesion for subsequent materials.

Outcomes depend on material compatibility, surface condition, and process parameters; resurfacing can extend service life and improve performance but may address only surface-level defects and sometimes requires reapplication or maintenance.
