Restidsmodeller, or rest time models, are mathematical models used to describe the distribution and dynamics of rest times—periods when a resource is idle between active periods. The mathematical framework often treats rest times as stochastic intervals. Common approaches include renewal processes that model successive idle periods, semi-Markov processes that allow transitions between states such as active, idle, and maintenance with state-dependent distributions, and Markov-modulated processes where the idle-time distribution depends on an underlying Markov chain. Data for estimation come from time-stamped logs of activity and idle intervals, with parameters typically estimated by maximum likelihood, method of moments, or Bayesian methods; model selection and validation use information criteria and predictive checks.

Limitations include assumptions of independence or stationarity, potential nonstationarity in demand or maintenance schedules, and data quality issues.
