Ressonância is a phenomenon observed in physics and engineering where a system oscillates with greater amplitude when subjected to external periodic forcing at a frequency close to its natural frequency. This natural frequency is an inherent property of the system, determined by its physical characteristics such as mass, stiffness, and damping. When the driving frequency matches the natural frequency, the system absorbs energy efficiently from the external source, leading to a significant increase in vibration amplitude.

This principle is fundamental to many natural and engineered systems. For instance, a swing set has a natural frequency at which it oscillates. Pushing the swing at this frequency amplifies its motion. In musical instruments, resonance allows specific notes to be produced with greater volume and richness by amplifying the vibrations of strings, air columns, or membranes. In contrast, resonance can also be detrimental. Bridges, for example, can experience catastrophic failure if subjected to vibrations matching their natural frequency, as famously demonstrated by the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Engineers often employ damping mechanisms to mitigate the effects of resonance in structures and mechanical systems, preventing excessive vibrations and potential damage. The concept of resonance also extends beyond mechanical vibrations, appearing in electrical circuits and even in quantum mechanics.
