Responsories are a form of liturgical chant used in various Christian traditions, most prominently in Western Catholic and Anglican rites. The term comes from Latin responsorium, meaning a thing that is answered. A responsory presents a short verse sung by a cantor or soloist, followed by a brief refrain or response sung by the choir or congregation. The form alternates between the verse and the response, and in many medieval offices the pair is repeated one or more times, sometimes ending with a final short line or doxology.
