Responsabilizarea is a Romanian term describing the process by which individuals, groups, or institutions are made more responsible for their actions and outcomes. The word comes from responsabil (responsible) with the suffix -izare, indicating a process or practice. In policy and social theory, responsabilizarea is often discussed as fostering accountability, empowerment, and self-management, sometimes translated as accountability or activation depending on the context.

In public policy and governance, responsabilizarea refers to reforms that transfer duties and decision-making power from central authorities to citizens or local actors. It appears in activation policies within welfare systems, where beneficiaries are encouraged or required to participate in work, training, or job-search activities. It also features in decentralization efforts that assign service delivery to municipalities, and in governance reforms aimed at greater transparency, monitoring, and responsibility of public officials.

In development, organizational, and civil-society contexts, responsabilizarea encompasses strengthening local ownership, civic participation, and the accountability of organizations and leaders.
