Resaving is the act of saving a digital file again after it has already been saved previously. It occurs during editing, processing, or automated workflows and is used to persist changes, refresh metadata, or adopt a new file format, compression setting, or encoding.

Common contexts include documents, images, spreadsheets, and other media files. In image editing, resaving after adjustments can alter quality or color profiles, particularly when converting to lossy formats. In data processing and software workflows, resaving may involve re-serialization of data to a different format or updating a stored state after transformation or cleanup.

Potential effects vary by format. Repeated saves can change file size and, in lossy formats, reduce quality. Even in lossless formats, metadata, headers, or embedded previews may accumulate with repeated saves. Some workflows intentionally resave to normalize metadata or enforce a standard encoding, while others attempt to minimize resaving to avoid drift from the original content.

Best practices include keeping an original copy, using explicit versioning or timestamps, and applying non-destructive workflows when possible. When finalizing outputs, choose the most appropriate format to avoid unnecessary recompression (for example, using lossless intermediates such as TIFF or PNG before exporting to a final JPEG if needed). Maintain backups and document the reason for resaving in the workflow.
