requestsput

Requestsput is a term used to describe performing an HTTP PUT request using the Python Requests library to create or update a resource at a specified URL. It reflects common practice in RESTful services to replace the state of a resource with a new representation.

Semantics and scope: PUT is defined as an idempotent operation, meaning that submitting the same request multiple times yields the same result as a single submission. PUT targets a specific, known resource URL and can either create the resource at that URL if it does not exist or replace its current representation with the provided payload. This behavior is distinct from PATCH, which generally applies partial updates, and from POST, which often creates a new resource at an server-defined URL.

Usage and examples: In Python, the Requests library exposes PUT through requests.put. Example:

Payloads and headers: Use the json parameter for JSON payloads, which automatically sets the appropriate Content-Type header. The response may contain a body with the updated resource, or it may be empty (204 No Content).

Practical considerations: Choose PUT when you know the exact URL for the resource and intend to replace its full state. For partial updates, consider PATCH. Also note that different servers may respond with 200 OK, 201 Created, or 204 No Content depending on whether a resource was updated or created and whether a response body is returned.
