A remontoire is a traditional French device used primarily for the manual operation of church bells. The term originates from the Old French word remonter, meaning "to raise" or "to lift," reflecting its function in lifting the bell rope to ring the bell. Remontoires were particularly common in rural and small-town churches in France, where mechanical bell-ringing systems were less prevalent.

The remontoire consists of a wooden or metal frame with a pulley system, allowing a person to pull a heavy rope to ring the bell. The device often includes a counterweight or a spring mechanism to assist in lifting the rope after each pull, reducing the effort required. In some designs, the remontoire may also incorporate a bell clapper mechanism to ensure the bell strikes properly when rung.

Historically, remontoires were operated by a bell ringer, often a church member or volunteer, who would manually control the ringing for services, announcements, or other ceremonial purposes.
