Remigration refers to the migration of people who have previously emigrated, typically describing their return to the country of origin or their movement to a new destination after an earlier departure. In migration studies, remigration encompasses return migration, circular migration, and other sequences of relocation involving more than one country.

Forms and patterns include returning to the homeland after a period abroad (classic return migration); moving from one country to another after an initial migration (secondary or re-migration); and circular migration characterized by repeated or seasonal moves between origin and host countries. Remigration can be voluntary or induced by factors such as conflict, expulsion, or policy changes that alter eligibility or incentives for settlement abroad.

Drivers and motivations vary, but common factors include economic opportunities or downturns, political stability or conflict, family reunification and care duties, aging relatives, educational or professional advancement, diasporic networks, and changes in visa or citizenship policies that ease settlement. Social and demographic considerations, such as population aging or skill shortages in the homeland, can also influence remigration decisions.

Policy implications and outcomes: remigration affects labor markets, demographics, and social integration in both origin and destination countries. Governments and international organizations may implement reintegration assistance, recognition of qualifications, language and housing programs, and data collection to monitor remigration flows. Measurement remains challenging due to informal, irregular, or temporary patterns and overlap with other forms of migration.
