This analogy simplifies the understanding of magnetic flux behavior by drawing parallels to electrical circuits. In an electrical circuit, resistance opposes the flow of current. In a reluctance network, magnetic reluctance opposes the establishment of magnetic flux.

The fundamental components of a reluctance network are analogous to those in an electrical circuit. A source of magnetomotive force (MMF), akin to a voltage source, drives the magnetic flux. The magnetic path, analogous to a conductor, has a specific reluctance, which is a measure of its resistance to magnetic flux. The magnetic flux itself is the equivalent of electric current.
