relajéis

Relajáis is the second-person plural present indicative form of the Spanish verb relajar, meaning to relax or loosen. It is used when the subject is “vosotros” (you all) and the action is applied to a direct object, as in you all relax something: Relajáis la tensión de los hombros. In this non-reflexive use, no pronoun is attached to the verb.

Relajáis can also appear as part of the reflexive construction with relajar(se). In the present indicative, the form appears with the reflexive pronoun os: vosotros os relajáis, meaning you all relax yourselves or calm down. In this reflexive use, the meaning shifts from relaxing an object to relaxing or unwinding oneself.

Regional note: the vosotros forms, including relajáis, are standard in Spain and in some other Iberian dialects. In most of Latin America, the reflexive vosotros form is rarely used in speech, and ustedes relajan or ustedes se relajan are more common equivalents. The spelling relajáis carries an accent on the a- with the stress falling on the -áis ending, which helps distinguish it from other forms.

Etymology and morphology: relajAR comes from the Latin relaxare, formed with re- (again, back) and laxare (to loosen). The present indicative endings for -ar verbs in vosotros form are -áis, yielding relajáis. The corresponding non-reflexive and reflexive forms share the same stem, differing only in pronoun placement and, for reflexive, the presence of os.

Examples: Relajáis la mandíbula durante la meditación. (You all relax your jaw during meditation.) Antes de la carrera os relajáis y respiráis hondo. (Before the race you all unwind and breathe deeply.)
