Relackning is the process of applying a new layer of lacquer to a previously finished surface to restore or improve its appearance and protective properties. It is commonly used on wood, metal, plastic, and composite substrates, including furniture, musical instruments, and automotive or industrial parts. The goal is to reestablish gloss, minimize micro-scratches, and seal the surface against moisture and chemicals, while preserving the underlying material where possible.

Materials and finishes used in relackning can include solvent-based lacquers such as nitrocellulose, polyurethane, and acrylic, as well as water-based formulations. The choice depends on the substrate, desired gloss level, durability, repairability, and environmental or health considerations.

Process steps typically begin with assessment and surface preparation. Old finishes may be cleaned, stripped, or mechanically abraded. The surface is scuffed and cleaned, edges masked, and sometimes a sealer or sanding sealer is applied. Lacquer is applied in several thin coats by spray, with controlled temperature and ventilation. Each coat is allowed to dry or cure before the next one, and sanding between coats may be used to smooth the surface. After the final coat, a curing period is allowed, followed by optional leveling with fine sanding and polishing to achieve the desired gloss.

Applications and limitations: Relackning is most appropriate for intact or repairable surfaces where the natural material, such as wood grain, should show through or a uniform color is desired. It may not be suitable for severely damaged finishes or surfaces with extensive staining. Environmental and safety concerns include volatile organic compounds and solvent exposure; proper ventilation, filtration, and disposal are required.
