Regnskyst is a term used in some meteorological discussions to describe a persistent, low-altitude cloud deck that yields prolonged rainfall over a relatively wide area. The name is a coinage drawing on words for rain and sky, and it is not an official classification used by major weather services. In scholarly writing, regnskyst is described as a regime in which moist air masses move slowly and steadily over a region, promoting stratiform cloud cover and continuous precipitation rather than short-lived convective storms.

The defining characteristics include extensive, stable low clouds, light to moderate rain that lasts from several hours to days, and limited vertical development of convection. In this framework, moisture convergence, persistent frontal forcing, or coastal upwelling of humid air can sustain the cloud deck. Inversions near the cloud base can suppress deep mixing, helping maintain a broad, uniform drizzle or steady rain across the area.

Geographically, regnskyst is most often discussed in maritime temperate climates with plentiful moisture and frequent marine layering, such as coastal regions of higher latitudes. It is sometimes invoked to explain extended rainy periods that do not fit classic convective storm patterns, though real-world occurrences may overlap with recognized phenomena like persistent stratiform rain, marine layers, or atmospheric rivers.

Observation and research focus on satellite imagery, radar reflectivity, radiosonde profiles, and ground-based rain gauges to distinguish regnskyst-like regimes from other persistent rainfall sources. The concept remains debated and is not universally adopted in meteorological classifications.
