Regionsområder, often referred to as regional areas or regions, denote geographical divisions that are used for administrative, statistical or planning purposes. In many countries, these areas are designed to group municipalities or localities that share economic, cultural, or infrastructural characteristics, allowing authorities to manage resources more efficiently and to tailor public services to the specific needs of each area.

In Norway, the term "regionsområder" is specifically used within statistical and governmental frameworks. The Norwegian Statistical Bureau (Statistisk sentralbyrå) defines several regions for the collection of demographic data, economic indicators and spatial analyses. These regions commonly align with socio-economic zones created by the national government, comprising several counties or municipalities. The purpose is to produce comparable statistics across time and to support policy-making at the regional level, such as transportation planning, healthcare provisioning and environmental protection.

The use of regionsområder is not limited to Norway. In the European Union, the concept of NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) employs a similar hierarchical regional classification, ranging from large macro-areas to smaller subunits. In United States geography, the U.S. Census Bureau identifies counties and census tracts as components of larger metropolitan or micropolitan statistical areas.

Although the specifics of their boundaries can change over time, regionsområder remain a fundamental tool for spatial planning, statistical analyses and governance, enabling stakeholders to address local and regional challenges with a coordinated approach.
