regiolect

Regiolect is a regional variety of a language associated with a particular geographic area. It encompasses distinctive pronunciations, vocabulary, and sometimes grammatical preferences that differentiate it from other varieties of the same language.

While related to dialects and accents, the term regi olect is used to emphasize regional usage within a single language rather than the idea of a separate language variety. It can include pronunciation shifts (phonology), region-specific lexicon, and, in some cases, minor syntactic patterns. The boundaries between a regiolect and the standard language form are often blurred, and regiolects may coexist with national or prestige standards.

Causes and dynamics: Regiolects develop through historical divergence, contact with nearby languages, migration, urbanization, and media exposure. They can be reinforced by regional identity and institutions, and may change as populations move or as standard forms spread or shift in status.

Features and variation: Within a region, regi olects vary by subregion, age group, social class, and urban versus rural settings. They are not fixed; features can spread to other regions or fade over time, sometimes giving way to the standardized form in formal contexts.
