Reflexrespons, or reflex response, is an automatic, involuntary reaction to a stimulus mediated by a neural circuit known as a reflex arc. Reflex responses occur rapidly and without conscious intent, enabling organisms to respond quickly to changes in their environment, protect tissues, and help regulate certain physiological processes.

A typical reflex arc consists of a receptor, a sensory neuron, an integration center in the spinal cord or brainstem, a motor neuron, and an effector such as a muscle or gland. Some reflexes are monosynaptic, with a direct synapse between sensory and motor neurons; others are polysynaptic and involve one or more interneurons. The response is usually preceded by a brief latent period during which the signal is transmitted and processed.

Reflexes are commonly classified as somatic, affecting skeletal muscles, or autonomic, affecting smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, or glands. They can be innate (inborn) or conditioned (learned through experience). Classic examples include the knee-jerk (patellar) stretch reflex, the withdrawal reflex in response to noxious stimuli, and the pupillary light reflex.

In clinical settings, reflex responses are assessed to gauge nervous system function. Examiners evaluate reflex integrity by comparing latency and reflex strength on both sides. Abnormal reflexes—such as hyperreflexia or hyporeflexia—can indicate lesions or dysfunction at peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, or brainstem. Additional tests, including H-reflex or other evoked potentials, may be used for more detailed assessment.
