Reef-compatible is a descriptor used in the saltwater aquarium hobby to indicate that a particular organism, product, or piece of equipment can be used in a reef aquarium without causing undue harm to the reef or destabilizing water conditions, when kept under appropriate husbandry.

For livestock, reef-compatible generally means the creature is not aggressive toward corals or other reef inhabitants, does not routinely damage or consume live corals, and can coexist with the typical bioload of a reef system. It can also describe equipment or substrates that are unlikely to leach toxins or corrode in seawater and that support stable water chemistry and biological filtration.

However, reef compatibility is highly context-dependent. A species labeled reef-compatible may cause problems in a particular tank due to size, behavior, feeding needs, or the specific mix of corals and invertebrates. Some fish or invertebrates marketed as reef-safe may nip polyps, disrupt feeding schedules, or outcompete others as they mature.

For aquarists, determining reef compatibility involves researching species-specific behavior, diet, and compatibility with corals and other invertebrates; assessing the tank's parameters and bioload; and monitoring for adverse effects. For equipment and products, reef-compatibility means marine-grade materials, corrosion resistance, and chemical inertness under reef conditions.
