Redukcija, also spelled redukcija, is a term used in several South Slavic languages (Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Slovenian) meaning reduction. Derived from Latin reducere, it denotes the act or process of making something smaller, simpler, or in a lower oxidation state. In scientific, mathematical, and linguistic contexts, redukcija is used to describe a transformation that preserves essential structure while reducing complexity.

In chemistry, reduction is a redox process in which an atom or ion gains electrons, decreasing its oxidation state. It occurs in combination with oxidation in redox reactions. Reducing agents donate electrons or remove oxygen in some contexts. Common examples include hydrogen gas, carbon monoxide, and metals such as zinc. The term redukcija is thus central to metallurgy, organic synthesis, and energy storage technologies.

In mathematics and computer science, reduction refers to transforming a problem into a different problem that is easier to solve or analyze, while preserving solvability. Matrix reduction (Gaussian elimination) simplifies systems of linear equations. In computational complexity, many-one reductions are used to compare problem difficulties. Redukcija, in these fields, is a fundamental technique for proving equivalence or deriving algorithms.
