Redrilling is a drilling operation performed to create a new borehole or rework an existing borehole after the first drilling has become unusable or incomplete. The technique is commonly applied in oil and gas exploration, geothermal development, and certain engineering projects such as civil and environmental drilling.

The process begins with evaluating the condition of the original hole. If the hole is blocked, collapsed, or deviated, a new borehole is initiated adjacent to or overlapping the old one. A suitable drill string, typically composed of a drill bit, drill pipe, and a series of collars, is selected based on the formation characteristics and required borehole diameter. Drilling fluid or mud is circulated to cool the bit, remove cuttings, and maintain well stability. As the drill head penetrates, geosteering tools may be employed to adjust trajectory and avoid hazards. Once the desired depth is reached, the new borehole can serve as a working well, a reference point for further drilling, or a means to remediate technical issues associated with the original hole.

Redrilling offers several advantages. It can save time and cost compared to start‑over drilling from the surface, reduce surface disturbance, and allows for corrections of misalignments or collapsed sections. However, it also presents challenges, such as managing wellbore stability around the previous hole, ensuring sufficient structural support, and handling the additional complexity of overlapping boreholes. Redrilling is thus a specialized skill that requires careful planning, robust drilling technology, and experienced personnel to execute safely and efficiently.
