redaksi

Redaksi is a term used in Indonesian and Malay journalism and publishing to denote the editorial desk or the body responsible for preparing content for publication. It can refer to the editorial department as a whole, the process of editing and compiling material, or the editorial content of a publication’s issue.

Origin: The term is borrowed from the French redaction (rédaction), meaning the act of writing or editing. In Indonesian usage, redaksi has been in common use since the early 20th century as media organizations professionalized and standardized their workflows.

In a newsroom, redaksi comprises editors, including roles such as the editor-in-chief (pemimpin redaksi), the managing editor (redaktur pelaksana), and other editors (redaktur). The redaksi sets editorial policy, assigns stories, edits copy, fact-checks, approves headlines and layout, and maintains ethical standards and journalistic quality. It also coordinates with departments such as photography, production, and publishing to ensure coherent output.

Outside journalism, redaksi may refer to the process of editing a manuscript or compiling content for a publication—an editorial or writer’s room concept.

Cognate terms in English include editorial and redaction; while redaksi is specific to Indonesian and Malay contexts and can denote both the department and the content produced under its supervision.

Note: The term should not be confused with redaction in English, which commonly refers to censorship or the deliberate masking of information.
