Professionalized is an adjective describing something that has acquired professional status or has been shaped by processes associated with professionalization. In practice, to professionalize a field or activity means to organize it around formal standards of knowledge, competency, and conduct, and to establish structures that regulate entry and practice.

The process typically involves creating or recognizing professional bodies, licensing or certification requirements, standardized education and training, and codes of ethics and professional conduct. It also often includes mechanisms for continuing professional development and accountability, such as peer review, disciplinary procedures, and regulatory oversight. Through these mechanisms, practice becomes more predictable and safeguarded by shared norms, with formal authority sometimes granted to licensed or certified individuals to perform certain tasks.

Historically, professionalization accelerated in the 19th and 20th centuries in occupations such as medicine, law, education, engineering, and public administration. As fields professionalize, they may gain social legitimacy, bargaining power, and the ability to set higher entry barriers. Critics, however, argue that professionalization can create gatekeeping, increase costs, reduce public access, and concentrate power among elites or organizations.

A field or organization can be described as professionalized when it exhibits formal education pathways, credentialing, standardized practices, ethical codes, and self-governance. Some occupations remain semi-professionalized or undergoing deprofessionalization, reflecting ongoing changes in technology, labor markets, and societal expectations.
