Reconnoitering is the act of conducting a preliminary survey or investigation to gain information about a location, object, or area, typically to support planning of operations or decisions. It is often associated with military and security contexts but is also used in exploration, emergency response, and navigation to assess terrain, hazards, or resources. The activity emphasizes observation and information gathering rather than immediate action.

The term derives from English reconnoiter, from French reconnoître, meaning to recognize or inspect; the noun reconnaissance covers the broader activity or result. Distinguishing between reconnoitering and reconnaissance, reconnoitering is the verb form; reconnaissance can refer to the process or the resulting collected intelligence.

Methods include ground reconnaissance, aerial reconnaissance using aircraft or drones, and electronic or signals reconnaissance to intercept or assess communications and radar. Modern practice increasingly integrates satellite imagery, unmanned systems, and geospatial analysis.
