This is followed by the mental processing and physical action of applying the brakes. The braking distance is the distance the vehicle travels from the moment the brakes are applied until it stops. This is influenced by several factors, including the vehicle's speed, the condition of the brakes, the tires, and the road surface (e.g., wet, icy, or dry). Higher speeds drastically increase braking distance, often exponentially.

Drivers need to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead, which should be at least equal to their reaktioväliä under ideal conditions. This buffer allows sufficient time and space to react and stop if necessary, preventing collisions.
