Reagointeinae are characterized by their small size, with the African pygmy hedgehog being one of the smallest mammals in the world, and their distinctive spiny coat, which provides protection against predators.

The African pygmy hedgehog is native to the Sahara Desert and the Sahel region, while the desert hedgehog is found in the Sahara Desert and the Arabian Peninsula.
