It occurs when the body does not have enough iron to produce adequate amounts of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Without sufficient iron, the body cannot produce enough healthy red blood cells, leading to iron deficiency anemia.

Symptoms of iron deficiency can vary in severity and may include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, and cold hands and feet. In more severe cases, it can also manifest as brittle nails, sore tongue, and an increased susceptibility to infections. Children with iron deficiency may experience developmental delays and behavioral problems.

The causes of iron deficiency are diverse. Inadequate dietary intake of iron-rich foods is a primary reason. This is particularly common in vegetarians and vegans if their diets are not carefully planned. Blood loss is another significant cause. This can result from heavy menstrual periods in women, gastrointestinal bleeding due to ulcers or polyps, or other chronic blood loss conditions. Certain medical conditions that impair iron absorption, such as celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease, can also contribute to deficiency. Pregnancy and rapid growth periods also increase iron requirements.

Diagnosis is typically made through blood tests that measure hemoglobin levels, red blood cell count, and iron stores such as ferritin. Treatment usually involves iron supplements and dietary changes to increase iron intake. Addressing the underlying cause of iron loss or malabsorption is also crucial for effective management.
