A ratel is a type of clutch mechanism used in mechanical devices. It is characterized by its ability to transmit torque in one direction while allowing free rotation in the opposite direction. This unidirectional engagement is achieved through a system of pawls and a toothed wheel or a similar toothed surface. When the driven component rotates in the intended direction, the pawls engage with the teeth, locking the components together and enabling power transmission. They are also used in hand tools like socket wrenches, enabling continuous turning of fasteners without needing to reposition the tool.
