Ratapyörät, also known as track bikes, are specialized bicycles designed for racing on a velodrome track. Unlike road bikes, track bikes have a fixed-gear drivetrain, meaning there is no freewheel mechanism. The pedals are directly connected to the rear wheel, so when the bike is moving, the pedals are always in motion. This direct connection allows for greater efficiency and control, but it also means riders cannot coast and must continuously pedal or use their legs to slow the bike.

Track bikes typically have no brakes, relying solely on the rider's ability to resist the rotation of the pedals to slow down or stop. They also lack gears and suspension. The frame geometry is often more compact and aggressive than that of a road bike, promoting an aerodynamic riding position. Handlebars are usually drop bars, allowing for a low, wind-cheating posture.

Velodromes are banked, oval-shaped tracks, and the banking of the track helps riders maintain speed and cornering. Track cycling events encompass a variety of disciplines, including sprints, time trials, endurance races, and team events, each utilizing the unique characteristics of the ratapyörä. The simplicity and directness of the track bike make it a pure expression of cycling performance.
