Rasvamaksahaigus, also known as fatty liver disease, is a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in the liver. It is broadly categorized into two main types: alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). AFLD is caused by excessive alcohol consumption, while NAFLD is not related to alcohol and is often associated with metabolic factors.

NAFLD is the more common form and is frequently linked to conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome. The disease can range in severity. In its simplest form, known as simple fatty liver or steatosis, there is fat in the liver but little to no inflammation or liver cell damage. However, in some individuals, NAFLD can progress to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves inflammation and liver cell damage. NASH can potentially lead to more serious complications like fibrosis, cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), and even liver cancer.

Symptoms of fatty liver disease are often absent in the early stages. When symptoms do occur, they can be vague and may include fatigue, weakness, or a dull ache in the upper right abdomen. Diagnosis typically involves medical history, physical examination, blood tests (liver function tests), and imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scans. In some cases, a liver biopsy may be necessary for a definitive diagnosis, particularly to differentiate between simple fatty liver and NASH. Management strategies focus on addressing the underlying causes, which may include weight loss, dietary changes, regular exercise, and controlling conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol. Avoiding alcohol is crucial for AFLD and recommended for individuals with NAFLD.
