A range extender is a device used to extend the reach of a system, typically by regenerating signals or supplying additional power. The term is most commonly applied to Wi-Fi range extenders that broaden wireless coverage; it can also describe range-extending systems in vehicles that increase driving range.

In wireless networking, a range extender connects to a router, either wirelessly or via Ethernet, and rebroadcasts the network or creates a new extended network. They may operate as repeaters, wireless bridges, or mesh nodes. Placement is critical; too far from the router reduces performance, while staying too close can waste the extender’s benefit. Standards compatibility, such as IEEE 802.11ac or 802.11ax, and security provisions like WPA2 or WPA3 are important considerations.

Range extenders in vehicles refer to devices that add electrical generation or energy storage to extend range, such as internal combustion engines that charge the battery in a plug-in hybrid, or small onboard generators used in some concept cars. In fully electric vehicles equipped with a range extender, the device can increase range at the cost of efficiency and emissions when used. Not all electric vehicles include one; they are more common in plug-in hybrids or as optional accessories.

Limitations include potential bandwidth reduction, added latency, increased power consumption, cost, and regulatory considerations. For best results, ensure compatibility with existing networks, use Ethernet backhaul where possible, keep firmware updated, secure network credentials, and consider newer mesh systems for larger or multi-room deployments.
