Rakuj is a Japanese term that can refer to several related concepts, primarily revolving around entertainment and performance. The most common understanding of rakuj is the traditional Japanese comedic storytelling art form known as rakugo. In rakugo, a single performer, called a rakugoka, sits on a raised stage (called a koza) and tells a long, humorous story. The rakugoka typically uses only a fan (sensu) and a hand towel (tenugui) as props, and portrays multiple characters through changes in voice and subtle shifts in posture. The stories, or naniwa-bushi, often feature witty dialogue, everyday situations, and a punchline at the end.
