Rahuleping, in English often written as “peace treaty,” is a formal international agreement that ends armed conflict and establishes the terms for peaceful relations between the parties involved. It is a binding instrument under international law and can cover a range of issues beyond immediate cessation of fighting, such as borders, security guarantees, governance arrangements, reparations, and the rights of civilians and prisoners of war.

Typical provisions found in rahuleping include cessation of hostilities, permanent or agreed borders, security arrangements or guarantees, demobilization and reintegration of combatants, political or constitutional arrangements, reparation or restitution, and mechanisms for dispute resolution and enforcement. Many treaties are supported by separate cease-fire agreements, verification missions, or monitoring provisions to ensure compliance.

Negotiation of a rahuleping usually involves direct talks, mediation by third parties, and sometimes involvement of international organizations. After signature, the treaty often requires ratification by the respective national authorities before it enters into force. The terms may specify timelines for implementation and may include clauses for revision or termination if certain conditions are not met.
