Common sectors include medical radiology (diagnostic X-ray, CT, interventional procedures), nuclear medicine, industrial radiography and materials testing, research laboratories, and nuclear power or waste management facilities. In these workplaces, radiation exposure is a central safety consideration and dictates specific procedures, training, and protective measures.

Regulation and safety are core aspects of radiotyö. In Finland, oversight is provided by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). Employers must assess radiological risks, implement a radiation protection program, and appoint a radiation protection supervisor. Workers receive training on radiological safety, use dosimeters to monitor exposure, and keep records of their doses. Dose limits for occupational exposure are defined by STUK and international guidelines, with an emphasis on keeping exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA principle).
