Radiotaajuussäteily, often abbreviated as RF radiation, refers to electromagnetic radiation in the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This spectrum encompasses frequencies ranging from about 3 kilohertz (kHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). RF radiation is a form of non-ionizing radiation, meaning it does not possess enough energy to remove electrons from atoms or molecules and thus cannot directly damage DNA.

Sources of RF radiation are abundant in modern society. These include radio and television broadcasting, mobile phones and cellular networks, Wi-Fi devices, microwave ovens, radar systems, and various medical equipment such as MRI scanners. The electromagnetic waves generated by these devices are used for communication, heating, and imaging purposes.

The interaction of RF radiation with matter depends on its frequency and intensity. At lower frequencies, RF radiation can induce electric currents in conductors. At higher frequencies, it can be absorbed by materials, leading to heating effects. The extent of absorption and heating is influenced by the dielectric properties of the material and the strength of the RF field.

Scientific research has extensively investigated the potential health effects of RF radiation exposure. International and national health organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), have established guidelines and exposure limits to protect the public and workers from adverse health outcomes. These guidelines are based on a comprehensive review of available scientific evidence. While significant research has been conducted, the scientific community continues to monitor and study RF radiation and its interactions with biological systems.
