Radiokirurgiaa is the Finnish term for radiosurgery. Radiosurgery is a type of radiation therapy that precisely delivers a single high dose of radiation to a tumor or other target within the body. It is not surgery in the traditional sense as it does not involve making incisions. Instead, it uses highly focused beams of radiation to destroy or damage abnormal cells, typically tumors.

The treatment is performed using specialized equipment that can precisely aim radiation beams from multiple angles, converging on the target while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. This precision is crucial for treating delicate areas of the brain and spine. Common indications for radiosurgery include brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and trigeminal neuralgia.

Radiosurgery requires meticulous planning and patient immobilization to ensure accuracy. Imaging techniques such as MRI or CT scans are used to define the target precisely. The procedure itself is usually painless and often completed in a single session, although fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy, where the total dose is delivered over several sessions, is also sometimes used for larger or more complex targets. Recovery is generally quick, with most patients returning to their normal activities shortly after treatment.
