Radiaaliliikettä, known in English as radial motion, refers to the movement of an object directly away from or towards a central point or origin. This type of motion is characterized by a change in distance from the center without any change in angular position relative to that center. Imagine a point on a spinning record; as the record spins, the point is undergoing circular motion. However, if that point were to slide outwards on the record, its movement away from the center of the record would be radial motion.

In physics, radial motion is often analyzed in conjunction with other types of motion, such as tangential or circular motion. For example, in the context of orbits, a celestial body might have a tangential velocity that keeps it moving in a curved path around another body, but variations in its distance from the central body, due to gravitational perturbations or elliptical orbits, involve radial motion. This outward or inward movement is distinct from the motion along the tangent to the orbit.

The concept of radial motion is fundamental in understanding various physical phenomena. It is applied in fields ranging from astrophysics, where planets and stars move, to mechanics, concerning the behavior of rotating machinery and fluids. The instantaneous velocity of an object undergoing purely radial motion is directed along the line connecting the object to the center of motion. Its acceleration is also directed along this line, either towards or away from the center, depending on whether the object is speeding up or slowing down its radial displacement.
