The small intestine is crucial for absorbing nutrients, vitamins, and fluids from food. When its absorptive capacity is diminished, the body cannot properly digest and absorb essential substances, leading to various health problems.

The most common cause of short bowel syndrome is surgical resection of the small intestine, often due to conditions like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, mesenteric ischemia, or extensive tumors. Other causes include congenital abnormalities where the small intestine does not develop properly, or motility disorders that prevent food from moving through the intestine effectively.

Symptoms of short bowel syndrome can vary depending on the length and location of the removed or dysfunctional segment. Common manifestations include chronic diarrhea, dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, abdominal pain, bloating, and fatigue. Specific nutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin B12, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), and minerals like calcium and iron, are also frequent.

Diagnosis typically involves a review of the patient's medical history, physical examination, and various diagnostic tests. These can include blood tests to assess nutrient levels, stool tests to check for malabsorption, and imaging studies like barium X-rays or CT scans to evaluate the remaining small intestine.

Management of short bowel syndrome focuses on optimizing nutrient absorption and preventing complications. This often involves dietary modifications, such as frequent small meals and the use of specialized formulas. In many cases, patients require parenteral nutrition, where nutrients are delivered directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. Medications may also be used to manage diarrhea, slow intestinal transit, or treat bacterial overgrowth. In severe cases, intestinal transplantation may be considered.
