Absorptive is an adjective describing something capable of absorption. In general use, an absorptive material or surface draws in liquids, gases, or radiant energy rather than reflecting or transmitting it, while an absorptive person or system readily takes up ideas or nutrients.

In physics and materials science, absorptive properties describe how a material interacts with radiant energy, sound, or matter. The key quantities are absorptivity (also called absorptance), the absorptance or absorption coefficient, which quantify the fraction of incident energy that is removed from a beam by absorption. Absorptive materials may be characterized by their spectral dependence; a material might be highly absorptive at some wavelengths and transparent at others. In optics, the Beer-Lambert law relates absorbance to concentration and path length.

Common examples include black pigments, carbon-loaded foams, and acoustic tiles used to dampen sound. In optics, high absorptivity leads to strong attenuation of light within the material, while in acoustics, absorptive materials reduce reflected sound energy in rooms and studios.

In biology, absorptive state describes the metabolic period after eating, when ingested nutrients are absorbed from the gut and directed toward storage or energy production.

In economics and organizational studies, absorptive capacity refers to the ability of a firm or economy to recognize, assimilate, and apply external knowledge and technologies, and to transform this knowledge into value. This concept is important for understanding how communities, organizations, and nations leverage external information for development and innovation.

Absorptive should not be confused with adsorptive (adsorption), a related but distinct process in which molecules adhere to a surface rather than being absorbed into the material.
